"American Aristocracy?" The radical rebels of 1776 believed in equal rights and threw off the shackles of royal domination to create a new free nation based on what today we call our "rural values." However, the Founders had more than just the British Empire to fight -- they also had to fight their own conservative fellow colonists. Then (1776) and now (2010), conservatives have always tried to move America towards old-world aristocratic social & economic systems with a permanent upper class firmly in charge, and middle and lower classes who know their place and regard the wealthy elite with the reverence which those elite feel entitled to.
